Fractional Chief of Staff & Executive Operations

Strategic support, operational leadership and hands-on execution for founder-led businesses

A fractional Chief of Staff adds experienced operating capacity close to the founder and leadership team—helping translate priorities into action, strengthen operating discipline and keep important cross-functional work moving. I work alongside leadership to create clarity, coordinate execution and take ownership where additional senior capacity is needed.
What a Fractional Chief of Staff Does

What This Role Is — and What It Is Not
A fractional Chief of Staff is not an executive assistant, project coordinator or outside consultant who delivers recommendations and disappears. The role sits closer to the founder and leadership team: understanding priorities, creating clarity, coordinating execution and taking ownership where additional senior capacity is needed. It is also distinct from a fractional COO engagement. While responsibilities can overlap, my focus is primarily on strategic and executive operations rather than assuming full ownership of day-to-day company operations.
When Fractional Support Makes Sense
Many founder-led businesses reach a point where additional operating capacity can make a significant difference. Fractional support may be useful when:
The founder is becoming a bottleneck for decisions and follow-up.
Leadership is busy, but priorities are not consistently translating into execution.
Important cross-functional initiatives do not have a clear owner.
Meetings generate discussion but insufficient accountability or follow-through.
Strategic priorities, KPIs or operating plans exist but are not consistently used to manage the business.
The organization is growing and needs more structure without unnecessary bureaucracy.
The founder needs a trusted partner who can move between analysis, planning, communication and execution.
Strategic Planning
Translate the big picture into clear plans and actionable next steps.
Team Alignment
Improve communication, accountability and visibility across the team.
Cross-functional Execution
Coordinate people, projects and dependencies across the business.
Special Projects
Take ownership of high-impact initiatives from start to finish.
Executive Operations
Create an operating rhythm that keeps priorities visible and decisions moving.
Operating Systems & Processes
Build processes, rhythms and tools for better execution.
How the Engagement Works
❖ Defined Operating Mandate
A focused engagement built around a specific management challenge, such as implementing a planning process, establishing leadership operating rhythms or coordinating a critical cross-functional initiative.
❖ Ongoing Fractional Support
Embedded support for founders and leadership teams that need regular strategic and operating capacity. Typical work may include leadership support, initiative ownership, planning, decision preparation and management follow-through.
❖ Interim or Transition Support
Temporary senior operating support during a period of growth, organizational change, restructuring or leadership transition.
Note: The scope and level of involvement are agreed at the outset and can evolve as the business changes.
Ways We Can Work Together
The engagement starts with a clearly defined mandate rather than an open-ended block of consulting hours. We agree on the priorities, responsibilities, working cadence and level of involvement required before the work begins:
Note: For ongoing fractional engagements, the level of involvement can evolve as priorities, internal capacity and the needs of the business change.
Define the Mandate
Clarify the business context, highest-priority outcomes, areas I will own, decision rights and level of involvement required.
01
Learn & Align
Meet the relevant people, review existing plans and operating rhythms, and get the information and access needed to work effectively.
02
Embed & Execute
Join the relevant operating cadence, take ownership of agreed initiatives, coordinate across functions and keep priorities moving.
03
Review & Adapt
Review progress regularly, surface decisions and risks early, and adjust priorities or the mandate as the needs of the business evolve.
04
Engagement Structure & Fees
Ongoing fractional engagements are scoped according to the mandate, level of involvement and capacity required, and are generally structured around a monthly engagement rather than individual deliverables. Defined operating mandates or strategic projects can also be scoped separately. Before work begins, you receive a clear proposal outlining responsibilities, working cadence, expected outcomes and fees.
FAQs
How is a fractional Chief of Staff different from a consultant?
A consultant typically advises on a defined problem. A fractional Chief of Staff works closer to the founder and leadership team and can remain involved in execution, coordination and follow-through.
Is this the same as hiring a fractional COO?
Not exactly. My focus is primarily strategic and executive operations: priorities, cross-functional execution, operating cadence, decision support and important initiatives. I do not position the service as full ownership of day-to-day company operations.
What kind of work can you take ownership of?
The mandate can include strategic planning, leadership operating rhythms, cross-functional initiatives, performance management, executive decision support, process improvement and defined strategic projects.
How much time will you need from me?
That depends on the mandate. The objective is to create enough access and alignment to work effectively without creating another management burden. The expected cadence is agreed at the outset.
Do you work remotely?
Engagements can be delivered primarily remotely, with in-person participation where it materially benefits the work and is agreed in advance.
How do you handle confidential information?
Confidentiality expectations can be formalized through an NDA or the client's existing agreement, and access to systems and information is limited to what is necessary for the engagement.
